Details of Helen’s weekly classes and courses are on the classes page. Helen also provides taster bellydance workshops for local groups, hen parties and organizations.
The Helen Ainslie School of Bellydance runs classes from beginner to advanced level, so hopefully you will find one suitable. Not sure which class is right for you? just ask Helen. In the meantime, here are some frequently asked questions:
What do I wear?
You do not need specialised clothing or shoes to learn bellydance. Wear something comfortable that you can move in easily (not jeans!); the kind of clothes that you would wear to a yoga or pilates class. It’s useful to bring a scarf that you can tie round your hips (though there are usually some spare that you can borrow).
Am I too old to learn Bellydance?
No! Students of all ages attend bellydance classes and all classes have a mix of (adult) ages, shapes, sizes, heights, fitness levels etc.
If you are in any doubt about your physical ability to attend the class then check with your doctor first.
When can I move up to the next level?
Each student is unique so there are no rules for this question. Many students are ready to move from Beginner to Improver after two terms, others are eager to move up after one and others have attended the Beginner course for 18 months before moving up. I would recommend at least two terms at Beginner before moving up to the Improver. Many students attend two levels at the same time before moving up a level completely. The Advanced course is designed for students who have attended classes and workshops for at least two years and have at least some knowledge of musical structure. If you are unsure whether you are ready to move up to the next level then just ask Helen.
Do you teach other classes?
All of my regular classes are detailed on the weekly classes page, however I also teach workshops at other bellydance events and also at other dance schools on occasion.
Do you perform?
Yes, I am a member of the Ramzy dance troupe and have performed with the Ramzy ensemble in concerts as a soloist and in troupe pieces. I am also one of the resident dancers at La Fontana in Reading and also at Il Gusto in Reading. I am a regular performer at Planet Egypt , Saqarah, Silk Route and other haflas and showcases.
Will I get a chance to perform?
Yes! All students get a chance to perform in at least one sizable show a year. The ‘Summer Spectacular’ is held every July and Helen joins forces with Al Warner, Rachel and other teachers in Reading to produce a student showcase with an audience of around 250 (friends, family and dancers). There are other opportunities for performing that arise throughout the year too.
